Vietnam has been producing and making tea for hundreds of years. Throughout many years of change and adaptation, Vietnamese people have grown and developed some original kinds into various ones such as Green Tea, OTD Black Tea, Oolong Tea.
Green Tea – The most popular type in Vietnam
Green tea is one of the most popular types in Vietnam, with the highest consumption rate across the country. Every year, thousands of cups of green tea are enjoyed by Vietnamese people from all regions. Preparing a perfect cup of green tea is simple—just steep dried green tea leaves in hot water for about 5-10 minutes. The water will gradually take on a green or light brown hue, while the flavor can vary from grassy and toasted to sweet or slightly seaweed-like.
When it comes to processing, green tea undergoes minimal steps before being packaged. You can easily pick fresh tea leaves or buds and brew them directly for a few minutes. In larger-scale production, green tea leaves are processed using more intricate methods, such as natural sun drying or pan heating. However, throughout the process, the leaves avoid oxidation, preserving the tea’s grassy flavor and vibrant green color.

Black tea – The most oxidized type
An interesting fact is that black tea comes from the same plant as green tea. The key difference lies in the oxidation process. While green tea leaves are not oxidized, black tea is produced by fully oxidizing the leaves, which results in a deeper color and a less grassy flavor. This oxidation happens just before the leaves are dried through heating.
To prepare black tea, the leaves are placed on a flat pan and allowed to wilt, curling into shape. When you brew a cup of black tea, the first sip reveals distinct notes of astringency and bitterness.
Oolong Tea – Common Type in Asia
Oolong tea also comes from the same plant as black tea, and green tea, but with different processing techniques. To have the finest oolong tea, all tea leaves need to go through five main steps, including withering, cooling, oxidizing, roasting, and drying.
Each step will be an important factor affecting the quality of Oolong tea variously. For example, the oxidization step, one of the most influencing factors to Oolong tea, will determine the flavor of the tea. It ranges from light to full-bodied, floral to grassy and sweet to toasty depending on the level of oxidization. Therefore, Oolong tea has various kinds which are created by changing some factors of processing.
